‘HOME: Ukrainian Photography, UK Words’ exhibition opens at UK Parliament

To mark the third anniversary of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, a new touring exhibition of Ukrainian photography will be displayed in Portcullis House from 1-28 February 2025.

Ukrainian curators Max Gorbatskyi and Viktoria Bavykina have selected a breadth of perspectives which range from specially commissioned works in which artists photographed their home in 2023, to a series of documentary works that comment on poignant points in Ukraine’s recent history – such as the annexing of Crimea – as well as insightful responses to the full-scale invasion. Other works look at identity, landscape, experimental art, folk or popular culture.

A young white woman wrapped in warm clothing looks straight forward with a neutral facial expression. The background is dark, with some smoke illuminated by orange flames behind the figure. The woman is wearing a yellow hooded jumper and scarf underneath a black overcoat.

The exhibition, HOME, facilitated by the UK Parliament Heritage Collections team, is a collaboration between UK Parliament and Liverpool’s Open Eye Gallery with support from the Ukrainian Institute, the British Council and the Arts Council.  It brings together photography with poetry to consider the concept of home.
