New Portrait Unveiled: Lord Singh of Wimbledon

A new portrait of Lord Singh of Wimbledon by artist Satyabrata Karmakar was unveiled at an event in the River Room in November 2024. The portrait was commissioned privately and donated to the Parliamentary Art Collection.

Lord Singh of Wimbledon 

Lord Indarjit Singh is a crossbench peer who entered the House of Lords in 2011. On joining the House, Lord Singh was already appointed OBE and CBE. He is Director of the Network of Sikh Organisations and is frequently represents the Sikh community at events such as the Cenotaph Remembrance Service and Westminster Abbey Commonwealth Day Service. He also presented the Coronation Glove to King Charles III at the Coronation in May 2023.

Lord Faulkner of Worcester, Chair of the Lord Speaker’s Advisory Panel on Works of Art, said:

Lord Singh first approached the Panel in 2022 about the potential for a portrait of him to be offered to the Parliamentary Art Collection… Lord Singh was raised to the peerage in 2011, and his inclusion in the Collection recognises his status as the first turban-wearing Sikh to join the House of Lords.

The Lord Speaker’s Advisory Panel on Works of Art oversees the development and care of the Parliamentary Art Collection in the House of Lords.

About the Artist  

The portrait was painted by the contemporary Indian artist Satyabrata Karmakar. Karmakar is from Kolkata, and completed his Bachelors in Visual Art at the Indian College of Art and Draftsmanship, Rabindra Bharati University. Karmakar won the Elizabeth Green Shields Award, Canada in 2008 and 2010.

The portrait is now on permanent display in the Palace of Westminster.
