Copper relief panel depicting an early modern queen escaping from a castle by boat. The queen is at the centre of the panel and is wearing in an elaborate dress, cloak and headdress. To her left are two plainer dressed women, the frontmost one clutching a small box across her forearm and the other almost hidden from view. All three gaze with anxious expressions towards a man on the very right of the panel who is leaning against and locking a large door set within a stone archway. To the left of the panel there is a small boat with a tasselled blanket or shawl draped over the edge. There are three men in the boat. The man closest to the queen holds a feathered cap in his right hand and grasps the queen's hand with his other hand, as though guiding her into the boat. Another man, whose body is angled towards the back and is holding an oar, faces back towards the queen. The third man, plainly dressed, sits in the boat gazing to his right and away from the scene unfolding behind him. The bottom edge of the panel has two square carved pieces ? one at the left corner, one right ? and gold text underneath the panel reads: The Escape of Mary Queen of Scots. The artists' names are incised in the bottom left and right corners of the panel.
