Description
Watercolour depicting the lying-in-state of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother. The lying-in-state took place in Westminster Hall from Friday 5th April to Tuesday 9th April 2002 (the day of the funeral). Huge crowds came to pay their respects, with queues stretching at their longest from Westminster Hall, across Lambeth Bridge and all the way along the south bank to Southwark Cathedral. This watercolour was sketched by Creswell in the hall over the weekend of the lying-in-state and was completed over the following months. The Queen Mother died on Saturday 30th March 2002 at Royal Lodge, Windsor Great Park. She was born on 4th August 1900 as the Hon. Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon. She became the Duchess of York following her marriage in 1923 to Prince Albert, Duke of York, the second son of King George V and Queen Mary. She became Queen Consort to him (as George VI) in 1936 following the abdication of his older brother Edward VII. Following the death of George VI in 1952 and the accession of their daughter HM Queen Elizabeth II, Elizabeth took the title HM Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother. Born when Queen Victoria was still on the throne, she was the last Empress of India, and lived through the entire 20th century. Alexander Creswell (b.1957) is a British watercolourist, specialising in architectural scenes.
