1854-1854 | WOA 5806
Small watercolour painting depicting the River Thames from the North. The Palace of Westminster rises above the water and dominates the right-hand side of the composition. The Elizabeth Tower and the Speaker's Residence face the viewer and the vertical lines in the carved stone façade are complimented by the gothic spires rising from the building. The clock face of the Elizabeth Tower and shadows the Victoria Tower behind are just visible. To the right, the top of Westminster Abbey and various nearby buildings can be seen above the trees and wooden boats that line the riverbank. In contrast with the vertical lines of the Palace, Westminster Bridge stretches horizontally across the composition. A scaffold in the water in front of the central arch of the bridge indicates that it's still being constructed but is nearing completion. Boats with multiple orange sails flag the left and right sides of the composition and their clear reflections indicate that the river is still. On the left-hand side of the painting, buildings behind the bridge compliment the trees on the far right. The sky is dominated by white and light-grey clouds which are reflected in the still of the water.
